December 3, 2025
Coinciding with the International Day for Persons with Disabilities on 3rd December 2025, the Bhutan Foundation and the Disabled People’s Organization of Bhutan (DPOB) officially launched Dra=Nyam, the country’s first dedicated outlet showcasing products made by persons with disabilities. The launch took place alongside the National Disability Conference 2025, bringing together government agencies, civil society organizations, international partners, educators, medical professionals, persons with disabilities, and community leaders to advance disability inclusion in Bhutan.

A Platform for Visibility, Dignity, and Economic Participation
Across Bhutan, many persons with disabilities have honed their talents through skilling programs led by DPOB and partner agencies—mastering weaving, tailoring, woodcraft, painting, and a diverse range of handmade crafts. Yet despite this creativity and skill, many artisans continue to work quietly from their homes, facing barriers such as limited market access, low visibility, and persistent social stigma. As a result, their products often remain unseen, and their incomes uncertain.

Dra=Nyam—meaning “Equality through Empowerment”—aims to bridge this gap by providing artisans with a dignified, professional retail space to showcase their work. Supported through the Bhutan Foundation’s Small Grants Program, the outlet is more than a marketplace. It represents a shift toward inclusive economic participation, offering customers a direct connection to the stories, skills, and perseverance behind each product.
A Milestone for Inclusive Development in Bhutan
The establishment of Dra=Nyam marks a significant step forward in recognizing the abilities and contributions of persons with disabilities. It reflects the shared commitment of DPOB, the Bhutan Foundation, partner agencies, and the disability community to strengthen inclusive development and ensure equitable participation across all spheres of life.
The launch underscores a growing national effort to create social and economic systems where empowerment becomes visible—and where every artisan has the opportunity to thrive.
