The Marangdut community in Panbang is excited to try out new farming techniques this season!

The Marangdut Farmers’ Group in Panbang took part in a three-day training on System of Rice Intensification. This technique, first piloted in Samdrup Jongkhar district as a collaboration between the Samdrup Jongkhar Initiative and the Bhutan Foundation, drastically increased rice yield in various villages.

In this first phase of this project, the farmers were trained on seed preparation and paddy seedling preparation, but the full-scope of the project will focus on helping the community in three major areas–food, water, and energy sufficiency. This is one of our efforts to enhance organic farming and ensure sustainable agricultural development and food security in Panbang.

Mr. Dorji, the Chariman of the Marandut Farmers’ Group stated,

“We are fortunate to receive support from the Bhutan Foundation which brought in expertise from the Samdrup Jongkhar Initiative to train us on SRI and bio-pest management. We’re hopeful to see the success of this pilot project. Such trainings are an eye opening experience for all of us and will help us ensure sustainable agriculture development and food security in our community. We look forward to receiving continued support from the Bhutan Foundation. Thank you.”
