Our Story
Our History
Established in 1986, the Bhutan Foundation was created to serve as a bridge between Bhutan and the international community. As the oldest international nonprofit dedicated exclusively to Bhutan, the Foundation supports the country’s development while respecting its unique values, culture, and vision.
Over the decades, the Bhutan Foundation has built a trusted network of more than 70 partners, working closely with local communities, civil society organizations, and the Royal Government of Bhutan. Our approach has always emphasized strengthening local capacity, fostering long-term partnerships, and ensuring that Bhutanese institutions and professionals lead the country’s development.
Strengthening Local Capacity
Guided by the principles of Gross National Happiness, the Foundation has evolved alongside Bhutan’s journey of modernization, supporting initiatives that preserve cultural heritage, protect the natural environment, promote equitable development, strengthen democratic governance, and raise global awareness of Bhutan.
Today, the Bhutan Foundation continues our long-standing commitment to helping Bhutan build a sustainable and resilient future while remaining an independent, non-partisan organization dedicated to transparency, accountability, and lasting impact.
Be part of this transformative journey.
When you support the Bhutan Foundation, you’re investing in more than just a cause — you’re investing in a vision: a thriving Bhutan that leads by example, inspiring the world with its bold commitment to happiness, harmony, and sustainability.
